Germany’s Christmas markets are famous for their festive atmosphere, rich traditions, and enchanting decorations. These markets have something for everyone—from traditional wooden stalls brimming with holiday treats to unique gifts and local crafts. We visited several of the iconic German Christmas markets in 2022, and fell in love with the cozy atmosphere and delicious, affordable food. I’m so excited to share what we learned from visiting Christmas markets in Germany in general, as well as share details about visiting some of the most iconic markets in Germany including Nuremberg, Cologne, Strasbourg, Rothenburg, Regensburg, and Munich.
Before we get started, here’s a map of all of the locations of Christmas markets I’m going to be sharing in this post! Tap either the share button or expand button in the upper right hand corner to save it for later:
General Tips for Visiting German Christmas Markets:
1.Visit on Weekdays: German Christmas markets can get crowded on weekends, so plan your visit during the week for a more relaxed experience. Be prepared to wait in line at some of the more popular food stands no matter when you go.
2. Bring Cash: Many vendors only accept cash, so it’s helpful to have euros on hand. Bring more than you think, trust me! I would recommend at least 50 euros per person.
3. Try Local Specialties: Each region has its unique holiday treats, so be sure to try local food and drinks for a more authentic experience. We’re not huge fans of alcohol, so we really enjoyed the Kinderpunsch (aka mulled cider). I’ll share more of our favorite foods below!
4. Dress Warmly: Germany is cold in the winter, so layer up to stay warm as you explore the markets. I usually wore thermal leggings and several pairs of socks.
5.Look for the longest line: This might sound weird, but often the locals know where the best food is. Sometimes it’s worth standing in line (usually they move pretty fast), if it means a delicious payoff!
1. Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt
Location: Hauptmarkt Square, Nuremberg
Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is one of the oldest and most traditional Christmas markets in Germany, dating back to the early 1600s. Known for its traditional wooden stalls and festive atmosphere, Nuremberg offers holiday treats like gingerbread (Lebkuchen), mulled wine (Glühwein), and the famous Nuremberg sausages. The market’s Christkind, a symbolic angelic figure, opens the market each year with a prologue, adding to its charming ambiance. Nuremberg’s market is also family-friendly, featuring a dedicated children’s area with rides and crafts.
We spent 3 weeks in Nuremburg, and had the privilege of attending the opening ceremony for the Christmas market and WOW, I’ve never seen so many people packed into a small square! It was an amazing experience, though, and I would highly recommend it! We went to the market several times, almost every night to be exact. We tried pretty much everything at the market food wise, and we loved everything. Literally we didn’t try one thing we didn’t like!
If you want to try something a little bit different, there’s a small market just down the road from Nuremburg that’s medieval themed. I personally loved this one because it felt really small and authentic.
