Practical tips for visiting New York City at Christmastime:
1. Plan for Crowds and Peak Times
- NYC is packed with visitors during the holidays, so anticipate lines and crowded streets, especially around Rockefeller Center and Fifth Avenue. Visiting these popular spots early in the morning or later in the evening can help you avoid the largest crowds.
2. Dress for the Weather
- New York winters can be very cold, often with icy wind. Be sure to dress warmly in layers, with essentials like a hat, gloves, and waterproof shoes. A warm coat with a scarf is also helpful, as many activities (like exploring holiday markets) are outdoors.
3. Reserve in Advance for Popular Activities
- Many holiday events, such as The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular and The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, sell out early. If these experiences are on your list, it’s best to book tickets as far in advance as possible.
5. Use Public Transit or Walk
- Traffic is often slow around holiday hotspots, and taxis or ride-shares can be expensive and delayed. The subway is usually the quickest way to get around, and if you’re staying in Midtown, walking to nearby attractions like Bryant Park, the New York Public Library, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral can save time and provide a more immersive experience.
Where to Stay in and around New York City for every budget:
(click the name of each hotel to be redirected to the hotel listing on Expedia)
Luxury:
The Plaza – The Plaza is iconic for a reason! It is gorgeous. Definitely expensive but I can’t think of a cozier time to visit than at Christmastime.
Park Lane New York – My personal favorite of the luxury hotels I’m recommending. The interior design is SO unique and beautiful, I would love to stay here.
Inter Continental NYC – A more affordable luxury option with an amazing location right in the middle of Manhattan.
Mid Range:
Hotel Mulberry – A simple hotel with a great location.
The Westin New York at Times Square – How cool would it be to stay right next to Times Square?! The design of this one is really cool also.
The New Yorker – A classic mid range hotel with all the amenities you could need in a great location!
Budget:
Comfort Inn and Suites Newark – While not technically in NYC, this would be a great option. You could fly into Newark, take the free hotel shuttle from the airport, and then take the subway to and from NYC every day! A great budget option.
Fairfield Inn and Suites – Pretty much next door to the Comfort Inn and Suites, near the airport. I would recommend checking the prices for both for your specific dates.
Things to Do in NYC at Christmastime
1. Admire the Famous Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center
No visit to New York City at Christmas is complete without seeing the world-famous Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. The enormous tree, adorned with thousands of lights and topped with a shimmering Swarovski star, draws crowds from all over the world.
While skating at the rink beneath the tree can be expensive, simply visiting and soaking in the holiday atmosphere is completely free. It’s one of the most iconic holiday sights in the world and a must-see during Christmas in NYC.
2. Stroll Through the Holiday Windows on Fifth Avenue
One of my favorite budget friendly activities to do during Christmastime in NYC is window shopping along Fifth Avenue. Major department stores like Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman go all out with elaborate holiday displays.
Each year, the window decorations feature whimsical themes, intricate designs, and dazzling lights that are a treat for the eyes. Best of all, this is a free activity you can enjoy at your own pace, and it’s perfect for getting into the holiday spirit.
3. Explore Bryant Park Winter Village
Bryant Park’s Winter Village is a holiday haven offering a mix of free and affordable activities. The park transforms into a winter wonderland complete with an ice skating rink (free to skate if you bring your own skates) and a European-style holiday market featuring handcrafted goods, seasonal treats, and hot beverages. You can also browse the artisan booths for unique, budget-friendly gifts. Whether you’re skating or simply strolling around the park, Bryant Park is a must-visit destination during Christmas in NYC.
4. Catch the Holiday Light Displays at Dyker Heights
If you’re looking for a neighborhood that goes all out with Christmas lights, head to Dyker Heights in Brooklyn. This residential area is renowned for its over-the-top Christmas light displays, with entire blocks of homes covered in festive decorations. Best of all, visiting Dyker Heights is free. Simply take a walk through the neighborhood or hop on a budget-friendly subway ride from Manhattan to explore this holiday spectacle. It’s an unforgettable way to experience Christmas in New York City without spending a lot.
5. Visit the Holiday Markets for Affordable Gift Shopping
New York City is home to several outdoor holiday markets, where you can find unique gifts and seasonal snacks at a range of price points. Some of the most popular markets include:
- Union Square Holiday Market: Offering handmade crafts, jewelry, and local goods, this market is perfect for finding thoughtful, affordable gifts.
- Columbus Circle Holiday Market: Nestled near Central Park, this market has a great selection of artisanal products and holiday treats.
- Grand Central Holiday Fair: Located inside the historic Grand Central Terminal, this market offers a variety of handcrafted items from local vendors.
You don’t need to splurge to enjoy these markets; window shopping alone is a great way to soak in the holiday atmosphere without spending a dime.
6. Take a Free Ride on the Staten Island Ferry for Views of the Holiday Lights
For a budget-friendly way to see the New York Harbor’s Christmas lights, hop on the Staten Island Ferry. The ferry ride is free, and you’ll get stunning views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the holiday lights adorning the city’s waterfront. It’s a perfect way to experience the beauty of NYC during Christmastime without spending any money.
7. Experience the Magic of the New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show
For a fun, festive experience on a budget, visit the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. While admission to the Holiday Train Show typically requires a ticket, the surrounding garden grounds and outdoor decorations can be explored for free.
If you do decide to pay for admission, the train show features model trains that zip through a miniature landscape of New York City landmarks, all made from natural materials. It’s a magical experience that will captivate both kids and adults alike.
8. Enjoy the Christmas Spirit at Central Park
Central Park is a magical place during Christmastime, offering a variety of free activities. You can take a leisurely walk through the park, stopping to admire the holiday decorations, the festive ice skating rink at Wollman Rink (which requires a ticket but is more affordable than Rockefeller), and the charming bridge that often appears in holiday movies.
Central Park is also a wonderful place to snap holiday photos, making it a perfect spot for both visitors and locals to celebrate the season without spending a lot.
9. See the Christmas Light Displays in Central Park
While you’re in Central Park, make sure to check out the annual Holiday Lights display. Some areas of the park, particularly around the areas near the zoo and the skating rink, are illuminated with twinkling lights that make for a romantic and picturesque experience. The best part? It’s completely free to enjoy!
10. Attend a Free Holiday Concert or Performance
New York City is filled with free or low-cost holiday performances and events during Christmas time. Many churches and concert halls offer free holiday concerts, including classic carol performances and choral ensembles. For example, Trinity Church often hosts free holiday concerts, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral features stunning Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses with live music. Keep an eye on local event listings for free or discounted performances that will let you experience the festive spirit without spending a lot.
New York City offers endless opportunities to celebrate Christmas without breaking the bank. From free holiday light displays, to affordable shopping at local markets and scenic ferry rides, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season on a budget. Whether you’re marveling at the Rockefeller Center tree, wandering through the holiday windows on Fifth Avenue, or taking in the festive lights of Dyker Heights, NYC is a magical place to be during Christmastime—and you don’t need to spend a fortune to make unforgettable memories.
So, bundle up and start planning your festive NYC holiday adventure—you’re sure to experience the magic of Christmas without spending too much!
